Invisalign: The what, when, and how

Invisalign, of late, has become a topic of discussion among parents with teenage kids who need teeth straightening or adults who wish to straighten teeth but are not keen on flaunting a set of metal brackets and wires when they head out to work or party with friends. Invisalign has grown in popularity over the decade and rightly so - given its many advantages.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign, although used synonymously, is a brand that offers clear aligners that help straighten misaligned teeth. Made from a flexible thermoplastic material called SmartTrack, it is a transparent tray, similar to teeth whitening trays, that snugly fit over teeth. Similar to the mechanism adopted by metal braces, aligners apply pressure on the teeth so as to make them move to the desired position.

When can you get Invisalign?

Invisalign is a blessing to teens looking to get their teeth straightened. Since their teeth are not as affixed in their position as they are in adults, the treatment time is generally shorter. In the case of adults, Invisalign has proved effective for adults in their 20s, 40s, and even 80s. Orthodontists take into consideration the patient's bone density when analyzing if an individual is a candidate for an orthodontic procedure, such as one that involves Invisalign.

Invisalign treatment - procedure

The Invisalign treatment uses new-age technology, offering quick and effective, as well as accurate results for the patients. The orthodontist starts the treatment by taking a digital 3D scan of the teeth's structure. He/she will then use the scan to create a series of aligners that will be worn by the patient in each phase of the treatment. Depending on the case, the patient could need a new aligner every one or two weeks. The teeth move to the desired position only if the aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day.

If you are worried about crooked or crowded teeth, choose Invisalign, and you will be thankful for the effective treatment that includes dental apparatus that is practically invisible!
